Curio.ca (from CBC/Radio-Canada) Renewal
|***Response deadline: June 24, 2016***|
|BC ELN has received renewal pricing for Curio.ca, the streaming audio and video product from CBC and Radio-Canada. Institutions can also opt to add the following streaming news products at an additional cost: L'Actualité en revue (French), News in Review (English), the National Geographic (French). More details are found below, and new this year, National Geographic (English).
There has been no pricing change since last year.
These products are made available to BC ELN partner libraries through a national site license, negotiated on behalf of Consortia Canada by Bureau de Coopération Interuniversitaire (BCI).
Launched on October 28, 2013, Curio.ca provides access to thousands of programs and documentaries - the best audio and video content CBC and Radio-Canada has to offer. English and French-language content is included, updated weekly - with no advertising - via an educational streaming platform. Material is available via broad categories (art, business, current events, law, education, health, history and geography, sciences, social sciences...) and the site can be searched for specific programs, themes, etc. to locate exactly what a professor needs. The website is tailored to teaching needs: professors can elect to set up their own profile and prepare program lists for courses, if desired. Functionalities include:
Each participating institution will receive one main account under the account of their consortium. Each participating institution can then request a number of accounts to be set up for each professor, who can then set up his/her individual profile so as to be able to prepare play lists for sharing with the students in his/her course(s). Library staff may also wish to set up a few accounts, for training purposes. A limit of 2,000 accounts for professors/staff per institution.*
*NOTE: Names of professors/staff for individual profile accounts are not required at this time. Details on the process for professors/staff to take advantage of this functionality will be provided upon subscription.
Content - CBC/Radio-Canada plans to add the CBC Digital Archives, as well as stockshots. There are a few older titles that they are still working on encoding and are actively uploading to Curio.ca - there are currently some 3,000 items. A reminder that CBC/Radio-Canada has to pay to acquire the rights to programs: even though programs are broadcast on CBC that does not necessarily mean that they own the rights ; in most cases independent producers make documentaries and shop around for distributors and thus retain their rights.
MARC records are now available for downloading from the Curio.ca website: Curio.ca Metadata. A working group was struck in early 2014, which identified enhancements to the current list of fields provided by CBC/Radio-Canada. The vendor worked with the group to support the provision of enhanced records. Step by step instructions on implementing the enhancements can be found at http://www.eln.bc.ca/docs/view.php?id=1648.
