Results of the 2004/05 ELN Ranking Survey

The 2004 Ranking Survey results are now available. As in previous years, the Ranking Survey asked a delegate from each ELN partner library to identify up to three titles, in ranked preference, considered to be suitable candidates for an ELN consortium license.

The highest priority titles, as identified by the survey results, are:
  1. Anthropology Plus and Hospitality & Tourism Index (tied for top ranking); and
  2. GeoRef.

ELN will obtain additional information and where applicable, coordinate trials for the above titles.

Also to be considered (schedule permitting) is the fourth ranked Canadian Literary Centre, which may be available under a platform currently licensed by ELN.

24 libraries participated in this year's survey (see Appendix B, below). A total of 7 declined participation, the most cited reason being a projected lack of sufficient funds that could be put toward licensed products in the forthcoming year.

Discussion and next steps

ELN's proposed actions with respect to the four highest-priority titles are described in the table below. One title, Anthropology Plus, is currently licensed by COPPUL, and so ELN's general course of action will be to explore the feasibility of libraries joining under that licence (or a joint licence) as applicable.

Title comments, proposed activities and dates

Anthropology Plus

Tied for highest ranking on survey with an aggregated score of 14, including 4 high votes.

Brief Description: described by RLG as "...the world's most comprehensive, focused index of bibliographic materials from the late 1800s to today in the fields of anthropology, archaeology, and interdisciplinary studies."

Actions: currently licensed by COPPUL (up for renewal in September 2005), ELN will first review feasibility of a joint-licence or similar arrangement.

Hospitality & Tourism Index

Tied for highest ranking on survey with an aggregated score of 14, including 3 high votes.

Brief Description: with coverage back to 1960's and with over 480,000 titles collected from 500 titles, the Hospitality & Tourism Index is a bibliographic database covering scholarly research and industry news relating to all areas of hospitality and tourism.

Actions: ELN will investigate pricing, platforms and availability for trial testing.

GeoRef

Third highest ranking on survey with an aggregated score of 11, including 1 high ranking.

Brief Description: described by the American Geological Institute as "the most comprehensive database in the geosciences" and containing "... over 2.4 million references to geoscience journal articles, books, maps, conference papers, reports and theses."

Actions: ELN will investigate pricing, platforms and availability for trial testing.

Canadian Literary Centre

Ranked fourth on survey with an aggregated score of 9, including 1 high ranking.

Brief Description: book and reference content from Essays on Canadian Writing Press (ECW Press). ECW Press also provides several individual monographs and biographies, essays and literary criticism. The database includes book reviews, essays, author biographies, and much more. Updated daily.

Actions: ELN will investigate pricing, platforms and availability for trial testing.

Appendix A: Ranked titles, in descending order (highest aggregate scores first)

NB: the aggregated score is the sum of the points assigned by each partner library where a high priority ranking is assigned 3 points, a medium ranking is assigned 2 points, and a low priority ranking is assigned 1 point.
