ELN Progress Report

October 2004 - March 2005

Goal 1. To build on existing projects and create new initiatives that take advantage of opportunities provided by emergent technologies and new resources to foster learner and researcher success.

1.1 Pursue new products and services that meet users' needs



  • Trialled and licensed the following new products: PsycBooks, PsycCritiques, PsycExtra, Communications & Mass Media Index/Complete, American Humanities Index

  • Met with representatives from EBSCO, Elsevier, OpenILL, ITS, and others to review new product offerings

1.2 Ensure existing products and services meet users' needs

  • Renewed the following database licences: Business Source Elite, Business Source Premier, CBCA Fulltext Reference, Encyclopedia Britannica Online, Encyclopedia of British Columbia, ERIC, MLA International Bibliography, Gale Literary Database, Gale Literature Resource Center, CPI. Q, Canada's Heritage from 1844, Canadian Almanac and Directory, eHRAF Archeology, eHRAF Ethnography, Health Science Databases, Project MUSE, QP LegalEze, ABI/INFORM Complete, ABI/INFORM Global, BC Stats, Canadian Research Index, Hoovers, PsycARTICLES, PsycINFO, Sociological Abstracts


  • Coordinated EBSCOadmin training sessions in Kelowna, Kamloops, Prince George, Vancouver, & Victoria

  • Enhanced ELN website events module to streamline attendee management


1.3 Expand membership and improve utility of the BC Library Collections Gateway

  • Migrated ELN libraries to new GODOT (v.2) interface. Developed ELN GODOT Template, used as default configuration for GODOT v.2 interface by non-COPPUL ELN sites. Also developed live testing utility

  • Developed list of open access collections available through CUFTS

  • Coordinated ELN feedback & participation in CUFTS Journals Database (CJDB) beta testing

  • Completed pilot project testing use of Z39.50 to check shelf status of items listed in union databases. Full implementation will require further development by Auto-Graphics

  • Held preliminary meeting with Public Library Services Branch to discuss directions for further development of OutLook / AGent system

  • Participated in Auto-Graphics User Group teleconference

  • Coordinated ELN partner library feedback for Auto-Graphics Due Dates Task Force

  • Notified non-COPPUL ELN sites of enhancements to SFU Library Systems' cufts2marc utility

1.4 Expand participation in interlibrary loans communications network

  • With Trish Rosseel (BCcampus/SFU), investigated options for BCcampus virtual reference pilot

1.6 Develop mechanisms for demonstrating the value of BC ELN Services


  • Published two issues of ELNConnect, the BC ELN communiqué

  • Presented 2005/06 budget proposal to Ministry

  • Reported on ELN activities at meeting of Council of Post-Secondary Library Directors (CPSLD) (Oct. 29)

1.8 Develop BCcampus Library Services Channel (Phase I)

  • Presented on portal development at ALPS (Dec. 3)

  • Presented on authentication infrastructure at Access 2004 (Oct 14-16, Halifax)

  • Completed development of Library Admin module, phase I. Includes functionality to manage library profiles, edit database descriptions, assign topics to courses and databases, and test database connections. Supports site-level and global administration

  • Worked with SFU Library Systems to integrate GODOT ILL requesting and CUFTS fulltext linker with BCcampus user authentication

  • With TrishRosseel (SFU), finalized and implemented email-based reference requesting in BCcampus portal





Goal 2. To sustain existing and create new relationships with cognate organizations in order to gain efficiencies and economies and deliver improved services, systems, and information resources to British Columbia learners and researchers

2.1 Complete transition to Simon Fraser University

  • Transition completed.


2.2 Develop working relationship with Irving K. Barber Learning Centre


  • Worked with Trish Rosseel (BCcampus/SFU) to coordinate preliminary discussions with UVic, SFU & IKBLC exploring possible BCcampus virtual reference pilot (see also 1.5)

2.3 Develop cross-sectoral relationships and initiatives

  • Participated in E-Health Library Working Group of the BC Academic Health Council (BCAHC); collaborated on development of business, governance, and implementation plans; reviewed/evaluated responses to RFP; undertook content gap analysis.

  • Met with BC Ministry of Education to discuss possible joint licensing initiatives

2.4 Maintain existing and create new relationships with relevant regional, national, and international consortia

  • Met with CRKN to discuss new initiatives

  • Provided ELN website code to Manitoba Library Consortium for local testing and implementation. Investigating opportunities for ongoing collaborative development
