BC ELN 2007-8 Ranking Survey: Public Results

The 2007/08 Ranking Survey results are now available.

The annual survey asks delegates from each partner library to identify up to three titles, in ranked preference, considered to be suitable candidates for a BC ELN consortium license.

The highest priority titles, as identified by the survey results, are:

  • ScienceDirect College Edition
  • Conference Board of Canada eLibrary
  • EBSCO's Literary Reference Center

BC ELN will obtain additional information and where feasible, coordinate trials for the above titles.

25 libraries participated in this year's survey (see Appendix B, below). A total of 4 declined participation due to a projected lack of sufficient funds.

BC ELN's proposed actions with respect to the three highest-priority titles are described in the table below.

ScienceDirect College Edition

1st in overall in aggregate votes (17).

Actions: Preliminary discussions underway. Will follow-up with vendor.

Proposed schedule: Fall 2008

Brief Description: Six collections: Social & Behavioral Journals, Health & Life Sciences Journals, etc. Geared to the information needs and budgets of 2 to 4 year colleges.


Conference Board of Canada eLibrary

Tied for 2nd in overall in aggregate votes (13).

Actions: Will initiate discussions w/ vendor.

Proposed schedule: Fall 2008

Brief Description: Electronic access to research reports and conference e-Proceedings on Economic Trends, Organizational Performance and Public Policy Issues.


EBSCO's Literary Reference Center

Tied for 2nd overall in aggregate votes (13).

Actions: Will survey libraries to confirm interest in a comparative trial that includes the currently licensed Gale product.

Proposed schedule: Oct or Nov 2008

Brief Description: " ... comprehensive literary reference database, which provides users with a broad spectrum of reference information from antiquity to the present day ... combines information from over 1,000 books and monographs, major literary encyclopedias and reference works, hundreds of literary journals, and unique sources not available anywhere else. LRC contains detailed information on the most studied authors and their works and is an essential resource for public, academic and high school libraries."

NB: the aggregated score is the sum of the points assigned by each partner library where a ranking of 3 (most important) is assigned a score of 3 points, a medium ranking is assigned a score of 2 points, and a ranking of 1 (lowest priority) a score of 1 point.
