BC ELN 2010-11 Ranking Survey: Public Results

The 2010-11 Ranking Survey results are now available. The annual survey asks delegates from each partner library to identify up to three titles, in ranked preference, considered to be suitable candidates for a BC ELN consortium license.

The highest priority titles, as identified by the survey results, are:

BC ELN's usual procedure is to pursue licensing efforts for the top three ranked products, including coordinating trials and (where feasible) proceeding to sign licenses. However, we have already had the opportunity to communicate with the vendor regarding the number three ranked product, Summon, and it appears that consortial licensing of this product is not possible at this time. Therefore for this year BC ELN will obtain additional information and where feasible, coordinate trials for the top two ranked products, Films on Demand and Critical Video Editions.

28 libraries participated in this year's survey (see Appendix B, below). One library declined participation.

Discussion and next steps

BC ELN's proposed actions with respect to the three highest-priority titles are described in the table below.

BC ELN 2010/11 Ranking Survey: public results

Titlecomments, proposed activities and dates

Films on Demand

1st overall in aggregate votes (40)

Actions: Will initiate discussions w/ vendor

Proposed schedule: Summer 2011

Brief Description: Films On Demand contains thousands of streaming videos assembled by the Films Media Group and bundled into eight subject collections. Users have 24/7 access on or off campus. All programming includes Canadian public performance rights and new titles are added monthly.

Critical Video Editions

2nd overall in aggregate votes (24)

Actions: Will initiate discussions w/ vendor

Proposed schedule: Summer 2011

Brief Description: Alexander Street's online collections of streaming video includes more than 8,000 titles in ten subject collections. All educational on-site and remote access permissions are included in the license terms.

Summon (web-scale discovery service)

3rd overall in aggregate votes (20)

Actions: Over the past several weeks BC ELN staff had the opportunity to attend a presentation by ProQuest/Serials Solutions staff on consortial models for Summon, and also to speak to Canadian sales staff. Pricing quotations for this product are based on a model which is highly customized to the particular needs of participating sites. This approach does not fit with BC ELN consortial pricing practices. Interested libraries are encouraged to contact ProQuest/Serials Solutions directly.

Brief Description: The Summon discovery service enables a web-searching experience of the full breadth of content found in a library's collections from books and videos to e-resources such as articles. Through one simple search to a single unified index, the Summon service provides instant access to the breadth of content in the library.

Appendix A: Ranked titles, in descending order (highest aggregate scores first)

NB: the aggregated score is the sum of the points assigned by each partner library where a ranking of 3 (most important) is assigned a score of 3 points, a medium ranking is assigned a score of 2 points, and a ranking of 1 (lowest priority) a score of 1 point.
